Discovering New Horizons

My recent visit to Sinan was my second exploration of this fascinating region, and it was even more remarkable than my first. This visit followed a meeting with Sinan-gun County Mayor Woo-ryang Park, whose passion and vision for the area were truly inspiring. After our insightful discussion, a government official guided me through the various development projects across the islands. Our journey began on a yacht, which made it easy to navigate from one island to another and experience the area’s unique features from a vantage point that few have the opportunity to enjoy.

 A Cluster of Islands, Each with Its Own Charm

Sinan is a stunning archipelago, consisting of hundreds of islands, each boasting its own unique identity and attractions. Traveling by yacht allowed us to appreciate the interconnectedness of these islands and their diverse offerings. The islands are home to thematic parks that highlight the natural beauty and biodiversity of the region. What sets Sinan apart is its ability to blend culture, nature, and modern innovation in a harmonious manner that feels both organic and forward-thinking.

The moment you set foot on the islands, you are greeted by lush green landscapes and vibrant themed flower gardens that define this region. Each island features distinct plant collections within thematic parks, showcasing Sinan’s unique and diverse natural beauty. These parks are meticulously designed to reflect the island’s native flora, offering visitors a rich and immersive botanical experience. The bonsai collection, in particular, stands out for its impressive scale, artistic arrangement, and exceptional upkeep. Each bonsai is a living sculpture, telling a story of nature, art, and the patient dedication required to shape these miniature masterpieces. Among the many islands we visited, one stood out for its unique connection to Korean cinematic history. This particular island served as the filming location for the critically acclaimed movie The Book of Fish. The film, which tells the story of a scholar and a fisherman during the Joseon Dynasty, beautifully captures the harmony between man and nature—a theme that resonates deeply with Sinan's ethos. The studio set, nestled within a national park district, faced potential removal by the Ministry of Environment due to its location. However, recognizing the cultural and historical significance of the site, permission was granted for the set to remain intact. This decision not only preserves a piece of Korean cinematic heritage but also adds a unique attraction to the island, drawing visitors who wish to step into the scenes of the beloved film.

The presence of the movie set amidst the serene landscape offers an immersive experience, allowing visitors to connect with the story and its natural backdrop. Walking through the set, you can almost hear the whispers of the past and feel the spirit of the characters who once roamed these grounds. It’s a tangible link to Korea’s cultural heritage, and the decision to keep the set underscores Sinan’s commitment to celebrating its artistic contributions.

Riding along the beach, with the ocean breeze on your face and the rhythmic sound of hooves on the sand, is an experience that captures the essence of freedom and connection with nature.

Mayor Woo-ryang Park and his team have a clear vision for Sinan’s future, one that balances preservation with progress. Their commitment to advancing the region is evident in every project, from the development of new tourist attractions to the support of local businesses and communities.
