City Views from Iconic Skyscrapers


I began my journey in Japan with a preview of Azabudai Hills, a landmark development in Tokyo. Before delving into my experiences in other cities across Japan, I want to share my perspective on the stunning cityscapes visible from some of the country’s most iconic high-floor hotels and stations. Many of these hotels are strategically located in prominent Transit-Oriented Developments (TOD) within their respective city centers, offering unparalleled views from the upper floors where I stayed. These elevated perspectives reveal the unique urban fabric of each city, showcasing Japan’s blend of tradition and modernity from above. 

The adventure started with a ride on the Shinkansen, the iconic bullet train, from Tokyo, followed by a series of stops at major Shinkansen stations, including Nagoya, Osaka, and Kyoto. The journey continued with domestic flights on JAL and ANA, taking me all the way to Sapporo, allowing me to experience Japan's diverse landscapes and cityscapes from both the ground and the air.

Major Cities in Japan



Japan's major cities each have their unique charm and character, blending modernity with deep-rooted traditions. Tokyo, the bustling capital, is a vibrant mix of cutting-edge architecture, world-class shopping, and serene historic temples. Nagoya, known for its automotive industry, combines modern skyscrapers with historical landmarks like Nagoya Castle. Kyoto, the cultural heart of Japan, captivates visitors with its ancient temples, traditional tea houses, and beautiful gardens. Osaka, often referred to as the nation's kitchen, is famous for its lively nightlife, street food, and warm hospitality. Finally, Sapporo, located in Hokkaido, is known for its ski resorts, beer, and the annual Snow Festival. Each city offers its own story, providing a unique glimpse into Japan's diverse urban landscape.

Sapporo is located in the northeastern part of Japan's main island. As you travel south, you pass through major cities like Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka, and Fukuoka, which are spread across the mainland. To the southwest of Fukuoka lies Okinawa, a stunning island chain renowned for its subtropical climate and unique culture.

Elevated Views Over Sapporo


During my journey through Japan, one of the most memorable experiences was staying at the JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo, a distinguished landmark in Sapporo. Perched atop the JR Tower complex, this hotel provides an exceptional blend of luxurious accommodations and breathtaking city views.

The JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo occupies the upper floors of the JR Tower, a prominent high-rise building situated directly above Sapporo Station. This strategic location grants guests stunning panoramic views of Sapporo and the surrounding landscape. From its elevated position, the hotel offers a unique vantage point to admire the city’s vibrant urban fabric and, on clear days, the distant peaks of Hokkaido’s mountainous terrain.

The JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo occupies floors 24 to 36 of the JR Tower. Guest rooms are located primarily on floors 24 to 33, offering luxurious accommodations and stunning views of the city. The top floor, the 36th floor, features additional amenities such as executive lounges and fine dining options, providing guests with an elevated experience and unparalleled views of Sapporo.

Elevated Views Over Tokyo

As a resident of Tokyo, I rarely have the opportunity to stay in high-floor hotels, but I frequently visit stunning towers like Azabudai Hills, Toranomon Hills, Roppongi Hills, and my current company Nikken Sekkei’s project Tokyo Skytree to enjoy breathtaking views of the city. Tokyo has recently experienced a surge in high-rise construction, with new skyscrapers rapidly transforming the skyline. Although these buildings are not as tall as some found in other parts of the world, the experience is still exhilarating. When you ascend to the upper floors, the absence of surrounding tall structures makes the city feel expansive, and the views are best up to around the 60th floor. Beyond that, you often find yourself above the clouds, much like climbing Mount Fuji, making it rare to capture those stunning urban vistas.

Japan’s frequent seismic activity, characterized by increasingly strong earthquakes, has significantly shaped Tokyo’s architectural landscape. All high-rise buildings in Tokyo are strictly regulated to withstand seismic events, adhering to some of the world’s most stringent building codes. Recent regulations require structures to be engineered to endure severe earthquakes, designed to protect against shaking with an intensity of 7 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale (Shindo scale)—roughly equivalent to a magnitude 8-9 earthquake, depending on the location and depth. This commitment to safety and innovation ensures that Tokyo’s iconic towers remain resilient, providing both peace of mind and spectacular views amidst the city’s ever-evolving skyline.

Tokyo is a complex and dense city with a vast and intricate transportation network. It handles approximately 14.6 billion passengers annually, serviced by around 158 lines operated by 48 companies. The system spans approximately 4,714.5 kilometers of operational track and includes around 2,210 stations. Despite its complexity, the transportation system is very convenient, with many people relying on smartphones to navigate and board trains, as multiple lines often serve different destinations on the same track. This complicated but efficient system reduces the need for cars, making it easier to move around the city. Driving in Tokyo can be a hassle due to limited parking and the difficulty of navigating the densely packed urban environment.

Elevated Views Over Nagoya


The Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel, a luxurious five-star establishment, is elegantly perched atop Nagoya Station, one of Japan's major Shinkansen hubs, offering guests an unparalleled vantage point over Nagoya’s downtown area. This prime location provides not only stunning panoramic views of the cityscape, including landmarks like Nagoya Castle and the iconic TV Tower, but also places guests at the heart of Nagoya’s vibrant urban environment.


The hotel is renowned for its sophisticated design, modern furnishings, and top-tier amenities that cater to both business and leisure travelers. The spacious rooms, located primarily on the 33rd to 35th floors, offer breathtaking views of Nagoya’s skyline. On the 36th floor, the top level of the hotel, guests can enjoy additional facilities such as an executive lounge, fine dining restaurants, and event spaces, all while taking in the most spectacular vistas of the city.

Dining at the Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel is equally impressive, featuring a range of restaurants serving both international and local cuisine, along with a chic bar offering panoramic city views. Elevated Views Over Kyoto


During my journey through Japan, one of the standout dining experiences was at Kagaya Kyoto, located on the 11th floor of the Kyoto Tower Building, directly connected to Kyoto Station. This restaurant uniquely blends culinary excellence with breathtaking views of Kyoto Tower and the cityscape, all within one of Kyoto’s most iconic transit hubs.
 

Kagaya Kyoto's strategic location within the bustling Kyoto Station complex—a renowned architectural marvel with its striking glass facade, vast interior, and diverse shopping and dining options—provides diners with an impressive vantage point. The elevated setting offers panoramic views of Kyoto’s blend of historic and contemporary urban landscapes, enhancing the dining experience with a picturesque backdrop.

The restaurant is celebrated for its exquisite traditional Japanese cuisine, including kaiseki, a multi-course meal that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and meticulous presentation. Its elegant interiors combine modern sophistication with traditional Japanese aesthetics, featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that allow guests to fully immerse themselves in the stunning city views while savoring expertly crafted dishes.

The Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel, perched atop the Abeno Harukas skyscraper—Japan’s tallest building before the completion of Azabudai Hills in 2023—stands as a prominent landmark in Osaka. Its prime location offers guests breathtaking panoramic views of Osaka and beyond, making it an ideal choice for a luxurious stay with spectacular city vistas.

Renowned for its sophisticated design, exceptional service, and top-tier amenities, the Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel enhances the guest experience with its high-altitude setting. The hotel occupies floors 38 to 57 of the Abeno Harukas building, with guest rooms on floors 38 through 55, ranging from standard rooms to deluxe and executive suites. Many rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing guests to fully appreciate the stunning cityscape and distant mountains, complemented by modern amenities and elegant furnishings.

The top floor, the 57th, is dedicated to exclusive amenities, including gourmet dining options and a stylish bar, where guests can enjoy fine cuisine alongside sweeping, unobstructed views of Osaka’s skyline and the surrounding Kansai region. This elevated setting offers a refined atmosphere that blends luxury with spectacular city vistas.

Soaring Views


My journey through Japan's iconic high-floor hotels and transit hubs offered a remarkable perspective on the country's diverse urban landscapes. From the luxurious Nagoya Marriott Associa Hotel to the panoramic views at the Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel, the breathtaking vistas at JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo, and the exceptional dining experience at Kagaya Kyoto, each location provided a unique vantage point to appreciate Japan’s harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. Many of these hotels are strategically located within Japan’s primary Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) areas, offering unmatched convenience and access. TOD areas are designed to maximize the use of public transit, seamlessly integrating hotels, shopping centers, offices, and entertainment facilities with major transportation hubs like train and subway stations. This prime placement not only provides guests with unparalleled access to extensive travel options but also places them at the heart of vibrant urban centers.

Staying in these TOD locations allows you to effortlessly explore nearby attractions, enjoy quick commutes to other cities, and immerse yourself in local culture without lengthy travel times. Whether catching a bullet train directly from your hotel lobby, wandering through nearby shopping streets, or savoring local cuisine within walking distance, these high-floor hotels offer a perfect blend of luxury, convenience, and connectivity.
